Better Futures Australia

Dear Friend,

May’s cooler mornings signal a new season, and a new four-year window to work together across communities, councils, businesses and investment—to shift Australia firmly onto a 1.5 °C-aligned path. Better Futures Australia is turning this season’s fresh energy into action with three headline goals for the new Government’s first 100 days:

  1. Secure a science-aligned 2035 target in Australia’s updated NDC.
  2. Deliver credible sector plans that create good jobs, lower energy bills and restore nature.
  3. Back a Pacific-partnered, high-integrity COP31 and phase out fossil-fuel subsidies.

Below you’ll find the latest on how we’re getting there and how you can get involved.

🌏 ON OUR AGENDA 🌏

/// FIRST 100 DAYS ADVOCACY

Early decisions set the ambition ceiling—raising it later is tough.

  • The Climate Change Authority’s advice to government on Australia's updated 2035 emissions target is due in coming weeks; three new directors (incl. the Chief Scientist) are in place.
  • BFA's business, investor and local government groups are readying cross-sector delegations set to start in July, timed with Parliament’s return.
  • Budget follow-up: BFA members are updating briefings for Treasury on transport, housing retrofits, strong environment laws and nature funding, sustainable finance and redirection of subsidies ahead of the October MYEFO.
  • Australia’s COP31 bid must be backed by solid domestic progress—our narrative work is under way.

/// BFA IN BRIEF

  • New Climate Champions Welcome Lincoln Ingravalle and Kal Glanznig to the network.
  • New SignatoriesPIDCOCK and Whip-Smart Co have added their names to the Declaration—great to have them aboard!
  • Q2 Multi-Sector Roundtable – On 30 April we heard updates from our five sector working groups plus InfluenceMap, Australian Council of Trade Unions, Beyond Zero Emissions, ACOSS and others. Snap polls showed the 2035 NDC update is the top collaboration priority.
