Co-Founder of the Islamic Thought, Legacy and Renewal (ITL&R) Group
We should celebrate the great blessings we experience in having a high standard of living, beautiful living environments, and abundant natural resources, while acknowledging our responsibility for stewardship of a whole continent."
Daud Batchelor intends to engage beneficially with Muslim communities, in Australia and overseas, including presenting workshops on on topical issues based on the group's professional knowledge and research. Dr Batchelor is an Adjunct Fellow with The International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS) Malaysia and has worked on Muslim community projects with Australian Religion Response to Climate Change (ARRCC) and the Climate Reality Project.
"With UK PM Boris Johnson and US President Joe Biden having undertaken to get friendly countries to ramp-up carbon-reduction commitments, the ALP could lead in devising an attractive national emissions reduction policy while the LNP government should give bipartisan support. It should raise the current target of carbon emissions reduction on 2005 levels to at least 40% by 2030, while targeting zero emissions by 2050."
Daud's vision is for Australians to become more caring for the environment, each other, and those impacted by climate change. He believes we should celebrate the great blessings we experience in having a high standard of living, beautiful living environments, and abundant natural resources, while acknowledging our responsibility for stewardship of a whole continent. He wants to see Australians aspiring to tread more lightly on this earth, reducing wasteful consumption, and following a moderate path of balance, contemplation, and contentment.
"Specific actions I would like to see, particularly for reigning-in wasteful consumption levels:
- Disincentives for large new house footprints.
- Disincentives for waste generation.
- Encourage more reuse of used household/clothing items.
- Develop a national 5-star rating of media advertising for public consumers in terms of ‘Marketing for Well-being & the Environment’ with high ratings for products that truly benefit society and the environment, and low ratings for detrimental products.
- Reduce red meat consumption.
- Government policy assisting immigration of climate refugees."
"Disorder and corruption has prevailed on land and sea owing to the evil deeds which people have wrought. The result will be that He will make them taste the fruit of some of their misdeeds so that they may return to the right path." - The Quran, Ar-Rum, The Romans, 30:41
