On Tuesday, 26 November 2024, Better Futures Australia hosted an online briefing on the proposals under Australia's Carbon Leakage Review.
This session, led by Ms. Edwina Johnson, Branch Head of Safeguard and CBAM, and the Manager for Climate Change Joel Rathus at the Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment, and Water, explored the findings of the review and policy options to address carbon leakage risks.
Attendees engaged in topics including the importance of a robust carbon border adjustment mechanism, adequacy of the Safeguard Mechanism reforms, the role of ACCUs, governance and industry adaptation in a carbon-border-adjusted world, and the role of public investment and local R&D and investment towards decarbonisation of at risk commodities.
A huge thank you to the team at DCCEEW and all attendees for the informative discussion and valuable contributions as we work towards sustainable policy solutions to address Australia’s carbon leakage challenges.
