Thank you to everyone who joined us for our informative session on the Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCU), held on 11 June 2024. This virtual briefing was aimed at participants from Griffith University's Climate Ready Australia 2030 and the Better Futures Australia program, focusing on the practical use and policy implications of ACCUs. Megan Surawski, Manager of ACCU Implementation at the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water (DCCEEW), provided essential insights into the ACCU scheme, discussing its impact on sectoral decarbonisation and its role in national climate strategies.
Questions raised included:
- Addressing fugitive emissions and improving reporting under NGER determinations.
- Examining the role of offsets within the hierarchy of mitigation actions and the new policy settings like the Safeguard Mechanism (SGM).
- Discussing the future of the ACCU scheme in relation to international carbon credits and the ongoing legislative reforms.
We extend a huge thank you to Megan Surawski for her comprehensive overview and to all the attendees for their participation and questions.
