Steve Murphy has been National Secretary of the Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union since September 2020, having previously held the position of NSW State Secretary since September 2017. Steve has worked for the AMWU since he was elected as a workplace delegate when he was a young tradesperson in the Hunter Valley in 1998.
Steve represents the AMWU on the ACTU Executive and is an elected ACTU President. During his tenure as NSW State Secretary, Steve was on the Unions NSW Executive, the Australian Labor Party Administrative Committee, the NSW Labour Advisory Council and the Boards of the Mechanical and Electrical Redundancy Trust and the Industry Capability Network.
The AMWU is made up of around 60,000 members in every city and region of Australia. AMWU members process the food Australia’s farmers grow. We manufacture, build, maintain and repair Australia’s aircraft, ferries, buses, trucks, trams and trains and build the equipment our armed forces rely on. AMWU members also print our drivers’ licences and newspapers, service our wind turbines, and maintain Australia’s mining equipment. Steve is passionate about working class politics and building a consensus around a manufacturing led recovery.
