Aunty Matilda House

Ngambri Elder from the Indigenous Peoples’ Organisation

The Better Futures Forum is privileged to have Aunty Matilda House welcome us to Country. Aunty Matilda House is a proud Ngambri Elder who has taken a leading role educating and advocating for First Nations Peoples and her Country. In 2017, the Australian National University presented her with an Honorary Doctorate Degree acknowledging her significant contribution to social justice, in particular her important role in key social justice organisations, including the Aboriginal Tent Embassy, the establishment of the Aboriginal Legal Service in Queanbeyan in the 1980s and as a member of the Aboriginal Justice Advisory Committee. Aunty Matilda was the 2006 Canberra Citizen of the Year. On the eve of the National Apology to the Stolen Generations in February 2008, Aunty Matilda became the first person to perform the Welcome to Country at the opening of Federal Parliament.
